Once they've been digitised they become as versatile as images from a digital camera. You'll be able to view them on your TV or computer, make copies and prints and email them to friends and family. The image area of a 35mm slide is tiny - about the size of a large postage stamp. Scanning an image this small - even at at 2000 dpi - will only allow for relatively small prints. If you want decent size prints - or if you want to be able to improve the composition of your pictures by cropping or if you want to straighten wonky horizons etc. - you need to think in terms of 3000 dpi.
