SARAH DODENHOFF at WARRINGTON OSTEOPATHS
BSc(Hons)Ost, Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy

STRUCTURAL, CRANIAL AND QUALIFIED PAEDIATRIC OSTEOPATH
OSTEOPATHY FOR ADULTS, BABIES AND CHILDREN

Sarah Dodenhoff is a Structural, Cranial and Paediatric Osteopath who has practised in the Warrington, Cheshire, the Wirral and Merseyside areas for many years. She uses both structural and cranial techniques to treat adults for musculoskeletal aches & pains, headache, back & neck pain, whiplash, frozen shoulder, arthritic stiffness, rheumatic pain, sciatica & fibrositis. Osteopathy is also useful for circulatory and digestive problems, including during pregnancy, tension and the inability to relax.

Having qualified with a BSc(Hons) in Osteopathy, Sarah followed this with intensive postgraduate training in Cranial Osteopathy, which is a very subtle type of treatment, and is one of only a few Osteopaths who have a postgraduate degree in Paediatric Osteopathy, (DipPaedOst), and a special interest in treating babies, children, pregnant women, and new mums. She has worked in the neonatal unit and children's ward of a London hospital as part of their Flying Osteopaths team, and a children's osteopathic clinic.

Registered Osteopath Sarah opened the Bold Street Warrington Osteopaths clinic to offer osteopathy not just to adults but also to babies and children. The child-friendly clinic is situated in the town centre and is open weekdays with 2 evening clinics. The clinic is owned and run by Sarah who has been practising osteopathy for many years. Sarah gained broad experience in both structural and cranial osteopathy whilst working in her own practice and within osteopathic clinics in Warrington, Merseyside, around Cheshire and the Wirral, Her Moreton practice is within Moreton Chiropody and Osteopathy Clinic.

Osteopathy is a safe approach to health care which looks at the whole patient, not simply treating the problem but looking at all the factors contributing to the disturbed state of natural health. With a highly developed sense of touch to identify any points of weakness or strain throughout the body, the osteopath carries out treatment using manipulation, soft tissue stretching, rhythmic joint movements and gentle releasing techniques.

Cranial Osteopathy is especially useful for treating frail people, pregnant mums and babies & children. It is a refined and subtle type of treatment which gently releases stresses and tension throughout the body, including the head, and is aimed not only at the relief of symptoms, but towards helping the body function better in all respects. It is useful for headaches, circulatory and digestive problems, aches & pains, neuralgia, tension and the inability to relax.

Back pain is very common among all ages and is one of the main reasons for absence from the workplace. It can be severe and debilitating and may not always occur immediately after injury, as the body is good at adapting to injuries and accommodating them. However the disruption to spinal mechanics can lead to a build up of strain, and tension over time, and often cause problems in other areas as well as the back.

Common contributors to back pain are occupational strain, where habitual bad back posture such as seating at computers or driving for long distances can place strain on areas of the spine and lead to back pain. Lifting heavy or awkward weights including babies, children and shopping can cause back strain, and if the back is already under stress from another cause, it may only take a small lifting strain to cause problems, usually at the weakest point in the spine.

As we get older falls are more likely to occur, and with increasing age the body tissues lose some of their flexibility and elasticity and are unable to recover as quickly from any trauma. This can lead to retention of strains which may aggravate existing problems and predispose to other illnesses.

Arthritis can occur in any joint causing swelling, aching and stiffness. It can cause lack of mobility and is debilitating.

For many women pregnancy means having to cope with a whole range of symptoms and discomfort such as upper back and neck pain, and osteopathy is a gentle way of helping the body adapt to the enormous changes which take place during pregnancy and delivery. As the baby grows in the womb, extra weight results in a changed centre of gravity, and posture changes from week to week, which can result in a variety of aches & pains including SPD. The two pubic bones meet at the pubic symphasis, the front of the pelvis, and during pregnancy the ligaments can soften and cause separation or stretching of this joint, causing pain.

Birth is one of the most stressful events of our lives, with baby subjected to enormous forces as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. This can sometimes cause retention of the stresses and strains which may cause problems in the baby. Please contact the clinic for information on how paediatric osteopathy may help your baby or your particular problem.

Registered osteopaths Jose Fernandez and Atskuko Miyashita also work with Sarah at the Warrington Clinic. Originally from Spain, Jose studied for five years at the College of Osteopaths and Keele University, and has undergone further training in the field of cranial osteopathy, with both the College of Osteopaths and the Upledger Institute. Introduced to manual therapy through massage more than a decade ago, Jose first trained in holistic massage before undertaking a one-year training course in remedial massage at Bury’s Northern Institute of Massage. This foundation gave Jose the basis for understanding how the body responded to ‘tension’ and it remains a core component in most of his treatments. Osteopathy is suitable for minor sports injuries such as muscle strains and ligament sprains, enabling muscles to work more efficiently. Originally from Barcelona, Jose has lived in England since 1997, is a keen sportsman and trains regularly at the gym.

Jose is interested in Ergonomics, and is a qualified Workplace Assessor. He is happy to go into the workplace to advise on workstation layout and posture, as incorrect posture either at computers or driving can cause problems.

Originally from Japan, Atsuko graduated from the European School of Osteopathy, and has completed courses in Cranio-sacral therapy at the Upledger Institute. Prior to her career in osteopathy she gained diplomas in Sports Therapy, Indian head massage and Holistic massage, and has worked with a wide range of patients from musicians to marathon runners. Atsuko enjoys treating all ages and conditions from babies to the elderly.

Vicky Taylor is the massage therapist at the clinic and offers both remedial and sports massage. This can also be used alongside osteopathic treatment where necessary, as both complement each other well. Vicky trained in Remedial Massage Therapy at the Northern Institute of Massage in Bury, underwent further training in Sports Therapy, and specialises in sports massage. She is registered with the Society of Sports Therapists.
