J Hill Property Maintenance Wants To Make Sure You’re Safe This Winter! So here is a handy list of things you should fix, check or keep an eye on!
Fix Little Niggles You’ve Been Putting Off Throughout The Year…
Those little niggling problems you kept meaning to get around to throughout the year, the flimsy pipe, drafty door, crack in the wall, perhaps it’s time to fix them now. By doing so you could be preventing bigger, more expensive problems when the cold weather really sets in.
Beat The Burglars…
Check your security lights and burglar alarm, get that broken fence panel back up and put that new lock on your back gate you’ve been meaning to put on for some weeks. Although we hate to think it, Winter/Christmas time is the opportune time for burglars. Dark nights provide cover for longer hours, cold nights mean we’re not outside so much to hear anything suspicious and the festive season means we’re often out visiting friends and family or late night shopping! Don’t make your home a gift for burglars this Christmas!
Check Out Your Insurance Policy…
Make sure you know what your insurance policy covers and you have a copy at hand in case anything goes wrong. The last thing you want is to have a problem in the house and be hunting high and low for telephone numbers and reference numbers just to speak to your insurance company.
Power Cuts and Snowfall…
It is a good idea to make sure you have a few of those essential items indoors in case of power cuts and bad snowfall. The last few years it’s taken us by surprise just how much the bad weather really effects us. Think about keeping an extra loaf of bread and bottle of milk in the freezer, some spare batteries and a torch in the drawer and make sure you know where to easily grab a few spare blankets if needs be.
Insulation…
A well insulated property is a must with these colder winters. Start out with the basic most obvious draft points and invest in some draft excluders where required. Although this may be a small expense we’d probably rather go without leading up to Christmas, you’ll probably save money in the long run as you will be heating your home rather than the street! Also think about checking cladding around your boiler and pipes and make sure no taps are leaking.
Check The Pipes…
Cracked, blocked, and leaking pipes could mean major expense through the winter. If a blocked or leaking pipe freezes during winter, they could expand and burst, potentially causing expensive water damage.
Gutters…
Lastly, check your gutters and clear any blockages. Blocked gutters could mean they are leaking in certain areas causing damp patches on the brick work. Although this could just look wet on the outside, if left these could create damp inside the property.
